I have been on a crash course in smart building technology this year. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an interesting place, forever evolving at a furious pace.

Nicolas Waern is the CEO/CoFounder of WINNIIO, a consultancy with a focus on the entire Real Estate lifecycle. We have become acquainted through our joint work together for Conectric. He’s a sharp guy, and a fellow believer of the value of real time data – after all, it performs better.

Introducing the Digital Twin.

Last month we were on a joint conference call for a presentation by SEKAI, a company based in Norway that is focused on developing the Digital Twin.

What, exactly, is a Digital Twin?

“A 3D copy of a physical asset, process or system. This can be a factory, a ship, a car, a city or any asset intensive industry. Enriched with data from many sources like IoT sensors, financials, weather or predictive analysis. Delivered in a realistic, easy to understand interface that fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing.”

Indeed, it does.

I work with a lot of engineers – if you are a consultant focused on clean technology and renewable energy, it is par for the course.

We often find ourselves in the quantitative world, immersed in product features, surfing through spreadsheets, noting performance metrics and the like. This work is invaluable and it is the root of industry technology.

Qualitative performance metrics matter.

Here we are focusing on opinions and sentiment. This is important stuff, in particular in regard to conveying ideas, defining value propositions and capturing sales.

Don’t lose sight of the picture, it may be an important one.
